This new years will be unlike any other. I see a great opportunity for change that has been due for a long time. 2000 is just an arbitrary date, but it can serve as a symbol of change. In this sense the coming of the next millennium will be a big event simply because people believe it will be.

Every year people use January 1st as an excuse to make changes in their lives. But 2000 will be different. Thousands of groups are forming right now, taking advantage of the World Wide Web as a way of creating small international communities. We are becoming less dependent on a simple mass cultural perspective and instead people are inventing their own systems. By creating a community of like-minded people with its own rules and goals, a space where things work differently, a group can literally create a new reality. The importance of creating these groups is that like artists, they can show us alternative/better ways of doing things.

Creating new communities that do not follow the rules and conventions of mass culture is a political act. By their very existence, these communities subvert the established system by offering alternative options and redefining what is possible. People will be confronted with the frightening option of making real choices about their priorities. This will eventually take people out of the passive situation they have considered "normal" and put them into an active position where they must make their own decisions and take responsibility for those decisions.
